AE Otters Win MPS Championship
The Huntsville Atom AE Otters entered the Muskoka / Parry Sound Championships on the January 19th and 2Oth weekend in Humphrey / Mactier . After playing through a tough winless weekend previously in Peterborough, the lads were looking to re group and win the MPS cup.  First game against North Muskoka Saturday morning was called “ puzzling “ at best . Numerous penalties and waved off goals lead to a long overtime that ended in a 3-2 loss for the Otters.

The second game for the Otters was against the Storm of Haliburton . The Storm got out of the gate quick going up 1-0 before Braydon Holman buried a Cole Patey rebound and the Nathan Markle took the reigns of the game and tickled the twine twice within 30 seconds from a nice deke and a feed from Wes Farnsworth . Goalie Owen Buczek robbed a storm player on a breakaway to keep the Otters up 2. In the second Owen stopped back to back breakaways within 20 seconds to start out . Markle stepped up again and scored to make it 4-1 after 2. In the third , the perfect definition of hustle was shown by Nathan Markle for his 4th tally of the game and then Taylor Cotrill scored to make the final 6-2 Otters.

In the third game , the Otters got what they wanted. A chance to redeem themselves against North Muskoka. Coach Farnsworth and I looked in the dressing room and listened to the chatter from the boys before the puck drop and both agreed, North Muskoka would have their hands full of hungry Otters. With the Otters on the P.P early on , Jack Lockwood fed the puck to Taylor Cottrill who scored and then some determined work from Holman paid off for Markle. 2-0 Otters after 1.

In the second with the Otters short , Wes Farnsworth scored compliments of some hard work from Holman and Markle in the corner. Before the period was out , Dman Lockwood raced back to thwart a break away and then Owen came up with another big save to keep it 3-0.

Only 20 seconds into the third, Dman Cole Punchard got in behind his goalie to stop a sure goal. Dman Tysen Robb’s smooth skating saw him clear the puck from harm’s way numerous times. The Otters then went into shut down mode and continually cleared the puck out, rolling to a 3-0 win. Goalie Owen Buczek gets the shut out.

The fourth game put the Otters into the final against the team from Almaguin. Nathan Markle tipped a Cottrill pass to make it 1-1 before Owen stoned two opposition players with big saves. 1-1 after 1 in a see saw battle.

In the second , it was Captain Cole Patey's turn to lead by example as he scored on a great effort to make it 2-1 before Kyle Mattice sniped the top shelf for a 3-1 lead after 2. In the third, Patey scored from a difficult corner angle and then finished off some hard work from Farnsworth for a 5-1 final Otters , making them the MPS CHAMPS. Congratulations players , coaches and parents. To the Almaguin players, coaches and parents, great sportsmanship was shown and appreciated by the Otters group. Very classy watching parents and players congratulate our boys after the game. That’s the way it should be !!
