Evaluation FAQ
Can my child try out for teams at any local minor hockey association?
As of the 2025/26 season, Ontario Hockey Federation—including OMHA—minor hockey players in the U10 age group and above have the opportunity to participate with the association of their choice regardless of category (AAA, AA, A, BB, B etc.).
Do I require a 'Permission to Skate' form?
There are no permission to skate forms required with minor hockey.
Do players need to register in advance for evaluations?
Yes. All players must be registered and paid up in order to attend and be offered a spot on a team.
What happens on evaluation day?
Please plan to arrive early so you have time to complete check-in. We’ll record your child’s attendance, the Head Coach will share a season overview, and your child will receive a tryout jersey to be returned after evaluations. Once they have their jersey, they can head to the dressing room and get ready to hit the ice!
What is the 'Evaluation and Release Process'?
*Note: this process is new for SPRING evaluations and is different from FALL evaluations*
For Spring Rep evaluations, players must attend a minimum of one (1) evaluation for a league they wish to try out for. There will be 3-4 evaluation skates scheduled over the course of one week and players may attend tryouts in any other center of their choosing within that timeframe. Each HMHA team may include up to four (4) players from outside our association.
If a Head Coach offers a player a position on the team and the position is accepted, that player must immediately stop attending other evaluations in alternative centers. Whether the player remains for the rest of the skates with their designated center is at the discretion of the Head Coach (some coaches may request signed players no longer attend to allow an easier view of the remaining players).
Teams will be formed at the end of the evaluations. Upon the conclusion of evaluations, all players must return their tryout jerseys. Failure to return the HMHA tryout jersey may result in a replacement fee charged to your account.
