Huntsville participates in a Local League hockey structure. Local League is group of teams from several local centres that compete regularly in a recreational league for fun. The season begins in early September (following OMHA guidelines) with the regular season ending in March.
Why play Local League?
The local league format provides an option for children to experience the thrill of competing against other communities but who have some barriers keeping them from travel Rep hockey.
Cost: Get the Travel hockey experience at House League prices.
The cost for Local League is much lower than for travel teams. Travel players pay additional travel fees plus several hundred more dollars each to cover team fees for tournaments, extra ice, jackets, track suits, etc. Local League players only pay the House League registration fee.
Opportunity: Great competition for all and no residency restrictions.
Local League gives players who can't play travel a chance to experience competing against other cities while representing their community in a league where fair play and fun are paramount.
Skill: Everyone plays and everyone improves and with no body checking.
Players who are just starting in hockey and are developing their skills will still get the opportunity to play competitively with out the need for try outs. The increased level of competition is more fun and creates more opportunities for skills development. Local League is NON-CONTACT at all age groups.
Time: Balance your love for hockey with your love for everything else.
Travel teams are generally on the ice 4 or 5 times a week. This is a huge time commitment. For those who love to compete in hockey but can't dedicate the time required to play travel hockey have local league as an option to play in a competitive hockey league and have time for the other things they love to do.

Local League FAQ
How often and how far will teams have to travel?
On average, teams travel less than once every other week for an away game. Average travel times are between 30-60 mins one way. Usually travel will only be necessary, on average, about twice a month. Carpooling for the approximately 10 to 12 away games each year can add a fun, social element to the hockey experience while also helping to manage transportation costs.
Will there be additional costs?
Besides the registration fees, HMHA does not charge any additional fees.
Can local league teams play in tournaments?
Absolutely! If there are enough players interested in playing at a tournament, teams can register for tournaments. Tournament costs are covered by the players participating in the event.
Is there body checking in the league?
No. Body checking is not permitted any age category.
