OMHA's Zero Tolerance Policy Reminder
It's time to reinforce the values that make our hockey community strong! Last season we noticed an increase in unsportsmanlike behavior, so we want to get a jumpstart and send this friendly reminder.
Hockey Canada and the OMHA has a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for derogatory comments or gestures from players, coaches, and parents.
The OMHA has assigned an automatic 7 game suspension for 11. 4 Discrimination. This suspension cannot be appealed, meaning the decision is final and binding.
Clarification on Regulation 11.4 Discrimination - most severe, non-match suspension given out. When it comes to words that meet the criteria as part of the 11.4 regulation, we have been told there will never be a "list" as to what words are allowable or not allowable.
Immediate Enforcement: The infraction must be called on the ice at the time the derogatory comment or gesture is made.
Criteria for calling the infraction: For the infraction to be called, the referee must
- Hear the derogatory word/phrase
- Identify the person who said it
- Determine that it was directed at another player, bench staff member, or official
- Assess the intent: Confirm that the comment was made with the intent to taunt, insult, or intimidate another person.
This ensures that the rule is enforced promptly and accurately based on the referee's direct observation.
Any player or team official who engages in taunts, insults, or intimidation based on discriminatory grounds will receive a Gross Misconduct penalty. Discriminatory grounds include, but not limited to:
- Race, national or ethnic origin, skin colour, or language spoken;
- Religion, faith or beliefs;
- Age;
- Sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity / expression;
- Marital or familial status;
- Genetic characteristics;
- Disability
Referees are on the lookout, and they've been instructed to address this issue closely. Fair play and respect make the game enjoyable for everyone.
Let's create an atmosphere of camaraderie, sportsmanship, and fun!
Let's keep it clean on the ice!
Parents/Spectators, your support is crucial, but inappropriate comments have no place here. You'll be kindly asked to leave if things go out of bounds. Let's be the positive role models our young athletes need!
