Atom Rep Try Out Letter
Tryouts are one of the many experiences in youth sports that prepare us for similar situations in our adult life, such as college applications, job interviews and more……

Making the minor hockey team can be one of the most difficult challenges that youth athletes can face – both physically and emotionally. And making the team can be hard, no matter how talented or driven the athlete -- as the well-documented tale of basketball icon Michael Jordan not making his high school team as an underclassman illustrates.  It’s important to remember the positives in the tryout experience – and that these positives exist whether or not you make a representative team. The Huntsville Otters Atom Rep BB try-outs are only one week away. As coaches we hope you
are as excited as we are to get the season started! To help you prepare for the try outs we would
like to advise of what to expect:

Player evaluation and selection will be based on the following:
• Skating
• Puck Control
• Passing
• Shooting
• Determination/Work ethic
• “Coach-ability"

You should inspect your equipment. Unpack your bag, and do a brief inspection of all your gear.
A quick check will give you peace of mind that all your stuff is in working order, and it will alert
you before tryouts start of anything that you may need to fix or replace. Pay special attention to
skate blade sharpness, cut skate laces, stick integrity, helmet straps, neck and mouth guards. You
can also re-tape your stick blades if the tape’s worn out. If you’ve played recently, leave your
gear out of your bag to ensure that it’s completely dry.

The Day of Tryouts

The first step on the morning of tryouts is eating a balanced and healthy breakfast. Fruits,
multigrain bread, and some eggs are a solid combination. Drink plenty of water, and avoid drinks
with caffeine or lots of sugar throughout the day. Have an early meal before you skate, You won’t
want a full stomach.

Plan to arrive approximately 45 minutes before the session to register and receive your jersey.
You will be required to wear that jersey during every tryout.

Tryouts will consist of 3 on ice sessions from Monday August 31 - September 3, 2015. Ensure
you follow the HMHA website to know when the tryouts are scheduled. Everyone is expected
to be ready for each tryout 15 minutes prior to going on the ice. The coaches will be speaking to
the group of players before you go on the ice.

When you’re getting dressed and ready for tryouts, be vocal and courteous to the other players.
Yes, you’ll be competing against them for a spot. However — if you make the team — some of
these guys and girls will be your teammates in a few days. There’s no reason to be rude and hurt
team chemistry before the team is even assembled. Further, coaches like team players. If the
choice comes down to you and another player, your good attitude might be what tips the scale.

On The Ice.

Stay relaxed, pay attention to the coaches, play unselfishly, ask questions whenever you’re
confused, and give it your all. If you do all of these things, you’ll have maximized your chances
of making the team.

Good luck!
